Fly back home!

October Movies

Halloween is my favourite time of year! In preparation I have the tradition of watching scary movies all month. I also subject my boyfriend (who is easily spooked) to them.

Just FYI, I am basically the female version of Karl Pilkington when it comes to opinions on stuff. Please don't expect some deep, critical thoughts on these films. A lot of these reviews are going to be very, "It was all right."

Spoilers will be hidden like this!

2024 Films

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) I actually watched this end of September, but I'm counting it because it was for a Halloween night at my local film club.

I have seen this film before, but I don't remember a single thing about it past the first half hour. I don't know how since the second half of the film is absolutely wild.

It's such a silly film and SO worth a watch. I also like it because the music video for my favourite Rammstein song, Engel, is based off of it.

My spook rating: 4/5. More silly than spooky, but still enjoyable to watch.

Watched on September 29th.

The Mist (2007) Starting off Spooktober with a rewatch! I've seen this a couple times before and I was just watching it in the background while setting up my About page. I love films where random people are thrown together and they have to make the best of it.

The scene with the solider is the most uncomfortable part of the whole film. AND THE ENDING! Don't even get me started on how crazy and tragic that was!

My spook rating: 4/5. The monsters were kinda lame, but it still had some of my favourite elements and the ending was was a good twist!

Watched on October 2nd.

Alien (1979) Finally got to wach Alien! I don't know how I've gone this long without having seen it. It's a really good premise and I did like the Xenomorphs. Theyre'a really cool concept.

My spook rating: 3/5. The acting wasn't the best in some parts, but I didn't hate it.

Watched on October 4th.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) This is a rewatch. I wanted to watch it again as I'm doing a dance routine to three of the songs, and also because my boyfriend has never seen it and I wanted to see his reaction.

He's not a big fan of musicals, but he seemed to enjoy it. He just had no clue what was going on half the time. I always enjoy coming back to this film ocassionaly.

My spook rating: 3/5 bats. Not particularly spooky, but a lot of fun.

Watched on October 5th.

Scooby Doo and the Boo Brothers (1987) This is a rewatch and it was my favourite Scooby Doo film growing up.

I would go to war for the Sheriff character and for Scrappy Doo. I don't understand why people hate Scrappy. He carried the entire team in the hunt for the jewels and they couldn't have done it without him.

My spook rating: 5/5. Not super spooky, but it gets points purely for nostalgia.

Watched on October 5th.

Aliens (1986) I've heard so many people say this is better than the first. After finally watching it, I have to agree!

This one was a lot of fun to watch. Had a lot of my favourite elements in it. Obviously more sci-fi and action than a horror movie, but I can't complain.

My spook rating: 5/5. Action packed and a lot of fun to watch.

Watched on October 6th.

My Best Friend's Excorism (2022) This is actually one of my favourite books, so I have no idea why it took me so long to finally watch the film.

There's some parts that have been changed. Some for the better and some for the worst. I quite liked how they actually went into the creepy house and you got to see inside. I don't think that actually happened in the books. I don't like how they changed their saying to each other from "I love you dearly not queerly" to "LYLAS (love you like a sister)" though. They also added another queer relationship dynamic between the two other friends, which I don't think happened in the book. It kind of took away from the two main character's relationship.

My spook rating: 3/5.

Watched on October 12th.

Smile (2022) Went into this one blind. I thought it was going to be a crime/thriller sort of film, but how wrong I was! I really like it though it was definately super creepy at points. I actually liked that it had supernatural elements as that's my favourite kind of horror.

I really liked the twist at the end, when you think that it's over but it's actually not. I know the second film has just come out and I hope that it's a continuation of this one.

My spook rating: 5/5.

Watched on October 13th.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022) If you've seen Candy Cane Lane (2023), then this is the Halloween version. Also exact. It was kind of cute, but also kind of stupid. Had some funny momements, but kind of gives of a straight-to-TV vibe.

My spook rating: 3/5.

Watched on October 14th.

Predator (1987) Another cool concept. I wouldn't say it was as good as Alien, but it was better than I expected it to be. Not sure if I'll bother with the sequels though. More action than horror.

My spook rating: 3/5.

Watched on October 18th.

Alien vs. Predator (2004) I know what I just said about sequels, but this doesn't count. I watched this before when I was younger, but couldn't really remember anything about it. It was okay is all I can say. I liked aspects of it.

My spook rating: 3/5.

Watched on October 19th.
